Working as a Health and Wellness Coach with many of my clients managing Diabetes Type 2.
I keep hearing the same words from all clients
‘I DON’T HAVE TIME FOR MYSELF’
‘WHO WILL DO IT IF I DON’T?
‘EVERYONE EXPECTS ME TO DO EVERYTHING, THAT’S THE WAY IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN’
I see a common theme with a lot of my clients, not just clients with Diabetes Type 2 but all clients needing to change their lifestyle or eating habits to lose weight for personal or health reasons. A lot of them have been putting everyone first throughout their lives, they repeatedly missed meals, missed out on sleep, cancelled nights out with friends, missed medical appointments, putting their fulfilment on hold, putting their jobs and their families above their own health. They do not take time for themselves and they actually see it as being selfish and feel guilty about it.
Mostly people are in a caring role looking after other people and loved ones, organising family events and so on. Making sure everyone else is eating right, happy, fulfilled and mentally and physically well.
Throughout a person’s whole life putting everyone first and not prioritising their own self-care. Forgetting that if they don’t look after themselves and take time for themselves, their chances of developing a health condition down the road is far greater.
With the levels of overweight and obesity increasing dramatically with 60% of adults and one in four children in Ireland either overweight or obese. More alarmingly the amount of people that are pre-diabetic that are unaware of their condition. Each person needs to start looking at their lifestyle choices and how they can choose to make a positive difference to their own health and start putting their health first in preventing the onset of a chronic condition which they will have to manage for the rest of their life.
Take a step back from your life today and ask yourself.
What is my body telling me? Really listen for warning signs.
If I had to go to hospital tomorrow, who would take over my care duties?
How long have I been putting everyone first and neglecting myself?
Am I at risk of developing a health condition?
What one small step can I make in my daily routine for my own self-care and start putting me first?
Who can I ask for support?
Most of the time the people around you do not even realise that they have been taking you for granted and that you need support and time for you until you tell them.
ASK FOR SUPPORT TODAY FROM THE PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT YOU, BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT YOU TO GET ILL.......WHO WILL LOOK AFTER THEM? OR WHAT EFFECT WILL IT HAVE ON THEIR LIFE?
OR IF THERE IS SOMEONE IN YOUR LIFE WHO IS THIS PERSON THAT IS ALWAYS DOING EVERYTHING, SUPPORT THEM, GIVE THEM A BREAK.
If you have any concerns that you may be at risk of developing Diabetes Type 2 or any other medical condition, please consult your Doctor for advice.
